Winter solstice. Winter solstice will occur on December 21, at 23:03 UTC. In Canada & other areas in the northern hemisphere, winter solstice marks the first day of winter. Many cultures celebrate the winter solstice, which has lead to various holidays arising around the time of year: Christmas being the most popular, but also Yalda, Saturnalia, Karachun, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Yule. December 25 is the start of the Christmas celebration, and the day the Sun begins to return to the Northern Hemisphere.
