Worryingly close. The BC Wildfire Service responded to a wildfire just outside town, near Coutlee/Billwiller Rd., late yesterday afternoon. Hwy 8 was closed going to Lower Nicola. Ground crews, helicopters and airtankers were on site quickly, along with members of the Merritt fire department. The suspected cause is a tree branch hitting power lines. The wildfire eventually reached an estimated 7 hectares, but by 7pm the highway was open again & all sign of smoke gone…

At one time Hydro would send out crews in the spring / summer and go along and trim trees too close to lines. Guess it cost too much money but then how much does a fire crew cost??
