Fire crews finally quashed the blaze around 4:30am on Canada Day. They finally were able to call it quits mid-afternoon.

Downtown fire On the eve of Canada Day, a fire broke out in the gap between two 2-storey buildings on Quilchena Ave. The blaze damaged the Starz Hair Salon/Earthwalker building as well as the adjacent Masonic Hall. No one was injured, though the 2 residents of the apartments are now without homes. The animals in Blooming Pets, on the ground floor of the Masons’ building, were able to be removed to safety.
